Water Snake or Water Moccasin?

It’s a nice warm day and you decide to go to the lake. You find a nice quiet area away from the crowd and settle down to bask in the sun. However, you soon discover you are not the only one enjoying the warmth of the rays. Laying stretched out on a limb hanging over the water is a large dark snake. You scream, he slithers and the quiet of the day is spoiled for the both of you. Upon hearing the scream, people come running and you explain how a huge water moccasin invaded YOUR territory. But are you sure it was a water moccasin? Maybe not.

All too often non-venomous water snakes are mistaken for the venomous water moccasin or otherwise known as the “Cottonmouth” so named because of its milky white lined mouth. The water moccasin and the water snake have many similarities that allow for these misidentifications. For instance, both species live around creeks, lakes, ponds, rivers, streams or swamps. Wherever there is a water source you are likely to find one of these guys.

Another common characteristic of the water snake and water moccasin is their size. Either may grow up to five feet in length. They both have keeled scales, broad, triangular heads and stout bodies. Both species may become aggressive if they feel threatened or if it is mating season.

With all the similarities between the two species, how would one tell them apart? Glad you asked. There are a few differences. As mentioned earlier, the water moccasin has a white lined mouth which it displays wide opened when it feels threatened. Also the pupils of the water moccasin are vertical, meaning that it has what appears to be a slit in the middle, giving it a very sinister look. The water snake on the other hand has rounded pupils .

So, if you happen to come upon one of these fascinating creatures and have the audacity to try to identify it, you can either ask him to open wide or simply look him in the eyes. I just suggest you leave well enough alone!

Holidays In Greece : What Food And Drink To Expect

In this installment of our guide to holidays in Greece we look at Greece’s cuisine…

Greece is located in Southern Europe and has extensive coastlines and islands in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. It offers a myriad of experiences, landscapes and activities and is famous for its beaches, reliable sunny summer weather, nightlife, historical sites and natural beauty.

Greece is one of the world’s top 20 tourist destinations. This southern European country attracts more than 15 million visitors a year, 90% of which come from other parts of Europe (but increasingly, the proportion of visitors from other regions of the world has been growing).

The most popular destinations include the capital, Athens, and the islands, especially Crete, Rhodes and Corfu. Some areas are very tourist orientated, but people seeking a quieter experience can still find places free from mass tourism.

The vast majority of visitors arrive during tourism season, which is April through October, with the peak of the season being July through to August. Outside of this time, most of the country’s tourist infrastructure goes into hibernation, particularly on the islands.

Athens and Thessalonki handle the bulk of scheduled international flights. However, during tourism season, several charter and planned low-budget flights arrive daily from many European cities to many of the islands and smaller cities on the mainland.

A valid passport is required on entry and a visa may also need to obtained by residents of non-EU countries. However, citizens of select non-EU countries (including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States) are allowed a 90-day visa-free stay.

It’s considered a safe country to visit (in terms of occurrences of theft and violence against visitors) and no immunization vaccinations are required or advised prior to traveling there.

Facilities Of Second Passport Are Second To None.

You may see big colorful ads online for a second passport. Do not wonder for long! These are the nations offering a dual citizenship. While you are a citizen of one nation, you can still have a second citizenship via immigration.

If your country requires you to renew your passport in less than ten years, you may want immigration. A second passport of a developed country will allow you their rights. Dual citizenship allows you to enjoy rights of both the countries. On the internet, you can spot many agencies which will help you get through your second citizenship.

Most countries have been putting up their immigration service ads online. Thus, you will notice, it is more of a business deal to get a dual citizenship. A second passport gives you better access traveling abroad and enhanced safety. These days, it takes only a few months to get second citizenship.

The main attraction in getting a second citizenship is tax remuneration. You get dual citizenship legally and enjoy the tax benefits in both the countries. There are many people going for such immigration between the USA and Europe. Thus, the second passport is taken more for tax cuts.

In more developed countries, it is not that easy to attain a second citizenship. You may be needed to show several investment options for their country before applying for immigration. Sometimes you may have to show your physical presence in that country for years before you can have your second passport. But then, a dual citizenship offers a basketful of benefits.

When applying to third-world countries for dual citizenship, be careful. The agencies handling your immigration papers may not be reliable and vanish soon after. You may have second passport, but for investment purposes, it will not be enough. Second citizenship gives you rights to avail the investment benefits of that country too.

Your second passport works as an insurance policy. When adversity strikes a country, you still have the option of availing your second citizenship. Hence, this remains the prime reason for getting a dual citizenship for most immigrants in any country.

Know the fine lines of applying for dual citizenship before getting a second passport. This will save you from any unpleasant revelations after immigration. It can be amazing to have second citizenship, if handled well.

The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are often referred to as the Auroras, and they occur as beautiful extraordinary displays of natural light in the sky. These can normally only be seen at night, and in what is known as the Polar Regions. In those regions, sometimes the lights are referred to as Polar Auroras, or the Aurora Borealis. The closer one gets to the North Magnetic Pole, the more vivid and beautiful the Northern Lights become.

While the northern lights usually appear high overhead when viewed from a location close to the magnetic north pole, as one moves further away from the north pole, this magnificent display of natural light tends to illuminate the horizon from one end to the other in a marvellous greenish glow. Having said that, there are times when the northern lights appear to be more of a red colour rather than green. When one considers the way in which these lights can appear to dance in the night sky is hardly surprising that some people view them as being almost eerie in a way, and this is perhaps why they have been referred to as a “dance of the spirits”.

So intrigued were people in the past regarding the northern lights, that even Benjamin Franklin theorized that they were the result of electrical charges being absorbed in the Polar Regions. He also suggested that the intensity of these displays were reliant on the presence of moisture in the air. Of course nowadays we know better, because rather than being the result of electrical charges being absorbed, they’re actually produced because of an interaction between solar winds and the earth’s magnetic field. When charged particles such as protons and electrons, collide with molecules and atoms in the upper atmosphere of the earth, usually above 50 miles, these displays of light take place.

These charged particles are known to originate from the sun. They arrive in the earths vicinity as a low-energy solar wind. It is then that the trapped magnetic field of that solar wind will orient itself southwards, and then connect with the magnetic field of the earth. Finally the solar particles will enter what is known as the magnetosphere and are accelerated toward earth.

When looking at the Northern Lights, it is the atomic oxygen, which causes the green tones, which are so characteristic. Furthermore, nitrogen ions and molecular nitrogen can also result in reddish and violet light, blue light, and even pink light, due to the interaction between the various gases and the earth’s upper atmosphere.

Sometimes the auroras appear as what could only be explained as curtains in the northern lights. These striations can of course change depending on an observer’s perspective and on occasions they can appear as a beautiful Corona. At this time auroral arcs can often be seen forming and moving towards the equator at around midnight.

It should be mentioned that the northern lights have also been seen from other parts of the world as well during the course of history. However, such sightings only take place at times when there has been an intense coronal mass ejection from the sun.

NASA has over the years has managed to record many wonderful Northern Light displays as they dance around the North Pole. Seeing these displays, as they were seen from outer space, can only be described as being, “amazingly beautiful”. In fact, the international space station has a huge number of photographs of this wonderful phenomenon.

Red Sea Egypt Divers

Ned Middleton describes how he and a team of Divers from Diving World discovered a wreck in the Egyptian Red Sea.

The trip was now scheduled for three weeks - commencing 18 December. Sounded good to me and I promptly ordered more film. Then he telephoned again. Firstly, he asked me if I knew anything about the Rosalie Moller - I did not (though I did know who to ask!), then he asked for my views on the conservation of shipwrecks - and I made them clear.

I know for a fact that my views are not shared by all Divers - but allow me to explain by using a hypothetical example: Shipwreck (A) is a steel cargo ship sitting upright, virtually undamaged on an even keel - in, say 30m. Generally speaking she is complete and intact with all portholes in place. On the Bridge we find the Bell, Telegraphs and Compass and this the Diver to pause and visualise what it might have been like when the vessel was underway. Then there is Shipwreck (B).

Structurally, very similar in size, attitude and condition - except that all the brass fittings have gone. Now, I know which I would rather photograph - but which would you rather dive? My attitude is best summarised, therefore, as “Take only Pictures - Leave only Bubbles” - and do so on behalf of fellow Divers.

That, however, was exactly what Yassin wanted to hear and he then asked me if I would be willing to appear on Nile Television and meet with certain Government Officials. When I agreed, he said that this would take up the bulk of the third week. Back at the drawing board, however, I could find nothing whatsoever on the Rosalie Moller until the National Maritime Museum sent me a fax of an old photograph of her sister ship - the Hubert built in 1910 and pages from two separate books showing “Rosalie Moller - raised after war and broken up!”

Now, as the days progressed - and please don’t ask me how, I gained the impression that the Staff of Diving World in Hurghada had actually found a “new” wreck but when I arrived it was the other way around - they thought I knew where it was. Suddenly the trip began to take a different shape as, within moments of arriving we began to discuss the prospect of a search.

Certainly the idea had merit - but let’s be realistic. Between us we had virtually no information, a faxed copy of an old photograph - and even that was of another ship, and a general area so vague it equated to a search area “south of Plymouth” and on top of that the Rosalie Moller was scrapped over 50 years ago. On the positive side, however, we did have our combined experience and passion for Diving and one or two clues.
